Only Prince would launch his Super Bowl show with a greatly phallic male-symbol stage sticking down the field, a bandana on his head and a powder-blue suit on his body. Prince conveyed hero energy to the stage, so much so that we’ve not seen anything quite like it since — with nods to Foo Fighters and Jimi Hendrix, actual rain, and guitar taste that acquire their spine chills en route — before the “Purple Rain” coda conveyed everybody to an emotional climax. He may have waited over a decade, yet The Purple One at last bested MJ himself.
